Meet Matthew Meyer, Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer

In 2024, Gauthier Vineyard appointed Matthew Meyer Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer. An accomplished and highly regarded wine industry veteran, Meyer brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and expertise to the family-run vineyard located in Eastern Virginia.

Meyer is renowned for his authentic approach to winemaking and his dedication to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of each vineyard he tends. His journey in the wine industry began in Napa Valley, where he honed his skills at some of the most prestigious wineries.

Over the course of his winemaking career, Meyer has established a reputation for excellence, earning numerous accolades including several 90+ point wines and winning the Virginia Governor’s Cup for the state’s highest scoring wine. He has also made wine internationally, including at Gerardo Cartellone’s A16 Bodega, a boutique winery near Mendoza, the wine capital of Argentina. There, Meyer crafted a premium Malbec wine known as “Reflective,” traveling to Mendoza each year to taste and blend that year’s harvest and assist with bottling previous vintages.

At Gauthier Vineyard, Meyer oversees all aspects of winemaking and winery operations, including grape cultivation from Gauthier’s onsite vineyard in Barhamsville. His commitment to quality and attention to detail align perfectly with Gauthier Vineyard’s mission to create outstanding wines that honor the rich heritage and the natural beauty of Virginia’s wine country.

“I am excited to embark on this new journey with Gauthier Vineyard,” said Meyer. “I love growing and crafting Virginia Wine and I look forward to continuing Mo and Sandi’s contributions to making the Virginia Peninsula AVA a world-class wine destination.”

“It was serendipitous that Matthew was looking for his next opportunity to make his mark on this great industry at the same time we were seeking to reimagine our operations to take the winery to new heights,” said Owner and President Mo Gauthier.

“Matthew’s understanding of not just the world of wine, but specifically what it takes to succeed here in the Commonwealth, makes his arrival a monumental moment for us and for this region,” added Owner and CEO Sandi Gauthier.
